KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Tennessee Highway patrol arrested a juvenile corrections officer for having illegal prescription drugs. Then he showed up to work without saying a word.

The officer, Samuel McCartha, is a guard at Richard L. Bean Juvenile Center. Superintendent Richard Bean says that he was not notified about the arrest by the highway patrol or by McCartha.

Tennessee Highway Patrol released a statement saying: "The Tennessee Highway Patrol is not required to notify an employee's supervisor or workplace following an arrest, nor is there department policy to do such."

Family and friends are shocked by the news of McCArtha's arrest, describing him as a loving father and model employee.

Bean says all of his employees are subject to random drug testing or ca be asked to take a test if there is suspicion of drug abuse. In the case of McCArtha, there was no such suspicion.

At the Richard Bean Juvenile center, 65-70% of the young adults there have drug problems.

"You know, we just can't have that when you're working with kids" Bean said.

McCartha has resigned from his position and is set to appear in court in December.
