KNOXVILLE (WVLT) -- One man was killed in early morning wreck on Interstate 40 near downtown Knoxville on Thursday, according to the Knoxville Police Dept. Police identified him as Ricky Staley, Jr., 29.
The crash, which happened around 2:30 a.m., shut down eastbound lanes near 17th Street for several hours; they reopened just before rush hour traffic picked up.
Preliminary reports indicate the driver of at tractor-trailer, Bobby Rhinehart, was heading east on I-40 when he saw headlights coming right at him. Rhinehart tried switching lanes, but the car continued coming toward him and they hit-on.
The driver of the Ford that collided with Rhinehart's semi, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from car. He pronounced dead at scene. He has not been identified pending the notification of his family.
