Crimetracker: 31 animals living in filth rescued from Monroe Co. home

TELLICO PLAINS, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Deputies rescued 31 neglected dogs, chickens, ducks and geese from a home on Ditmore Hollow Road in Tellico Plains. The dogs are all recovering at the Monroe County Friends of Animals Shelter.

"They were very hungry, some of them were throwing up, but after they get some cookies and some good food into them, they all seem to do be doing very well," said Alan Hammersmith, president of Monroe County Friends of Animals.

Monroe County deputies found severe neglect and deplorable living conditions both inside and outside the home. When they seized the animals, they said the homeowner had been out of town for 10 days without providing for them.

"No animal should go without food or water for the ten days that they went. Some of them were in crates. There were a couple of animals that were in crates and didn't even have access to food or water. We understand that the person on the property left some chicken feed around for the dogs and obviously this is not acceptable food for a dog," said Hammersmith.

Michael Gibbons said he's not suprised his neighbor is in trouble.

"She's got geese everywhere, there's dogs, cats, there's feces everywhere - rats running around. It's pretty pathetic up there," said Gibbons.

The shelter said several feral dogs are still at the home, and they'll be brought to the shelter once they're caught.

When deputies find the homeowner, she'll face charges. They're not releasing her name until she's arrested.
