KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Deputies surrounded William Ferguson III's car and arrested him around 12:30 Sunday morning following a high speed chase. It started as a traffic stop 20 minutes earlier at the intersection of Cavette Hill Lane and Kingston Pike in Knox County. As the deputy approached his 1995 Mustang, Ferguson took off, knocking him to the ground.

"Makes me concerned about the officers because every time they stop somebody, they don't know what's going to happen. And obviously he put himself at risk. So it does create concern," said Bill Hovis, who lives nearby.

Ferguson sped to Campbell Station Road, where he got on the highway and continued driving through Loudon County on I-75 South. According to deputies, he hit road spikes in Loudon and Monroe counties before getting off at exit 62 in Monroe County and spinning to stop in the median.

Ferguson faces a slew of assault charges, but that's not all. He also faces resisting arrest, reckless driving, driving on a revoked license and 8th offense DUI - something many are shocked and scared by.

"Oh my Gosh. He shouldn't be driving anyway. We've actually got a young driver in our family so we don't like to hear things like that going on in our community," said Wes Wysor.

"It tells me that he has relatively little concern for the law or for other people. So again, you have to admire the Sheriff's out there and the deputies that are doing their job," said Hovis.

Ferguson was jailed under a $39,000 bond.
