Crimetracker: Man accused of pouring lighter fluid on wife and truck, trying to set truck on fire. Wife says it's all a misunderstanding

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Hannah Ingram said she, her husband John and a friend were all drinking at home when John started funneling beers.

"Everything was good, and then he got this far off look in his eye - the look like, 'the lights are on, but nobody's home,'" said Ingram.

She said he was mad and ran outside to her truck.

"He was in the back bed of the truck trying to pry open my back windows."

There are different accounts of what happened next. According to the warrants, Ingram pushed his wife down the stairs, grabbed a can of lighter fluid, poured it inside the truck, on his wife and her friend and then tried to set the truck on fire.

Ingram said her husband never threw her down the stairs and said he was so drunk, he didn't even realize what was happening.

"He basically told us that he didn't want to be messed with, and if we didn't leave him alone, he was going to pour the beer out on us. I said, 'Honey, that's not beer.'"

Ingram said it took her ten minutes to convince him it was lighter fluid and said she told him if he didn't shape up, she would leave. That's when she said he made a joke:

"He asked for a lighter to smoke a cigarrette and I handed it to him - and after he had found out that it was lighter fluid after he had been calling it beer, he kind of laughed about it and held the lighter over it," said Ingram.

No matter who you believe, one neighbor said she's shocked:

"It's scary - makes me a little nervous. You know, did I make the right choice moving here?" said Kathy Tompkin, who lives across the street.

Police said John Ingram ran off when they showed up. He came back home a couple hours later, and police found him with a number of stolen items, including a backpack, a laptop and a skateboard.

Hannah Ingram said he's never acted this way before in the nine months they've been together, and she has a plan for when he gets out of jail.

"You can believe I'm going to be milking foot massages for the next six months at least," she said.

John Ingram faces multiple charges including attempted arson, aggravated assault, evading arrest and theft. The charges were all bound over to the grand jury.
