KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knoxville Police Officers responded to a home invasion in the 1800 block of Woodbine Avenue in East Knoxville around 7:45 p.m. Thursday.
According to police, two men forced their way into the home, as one of the victims opened the door to walk outside.
Three people were inside. Police said one of the suspects pointed a handgun at an occupant and forced him get on the ground. He then approached a woman and demanded money. The third occupant, the woman's boyfriend, ran to a bedroom and closed the door. One of the suspects pursued and forced the bedroom door open.
According to police, the suspect ordered the man out of the bedroom, at gunpoint. The handgun was fired, when the victim began to struggle with the suspect. They struggled for a brief period of time, before the gun was fired again and the victim was shot in the back with a .22 caliber bullet.
Officers said, the second suspect continued to demand money from the woman. When he told her to give him everything, she emptied several medicine bottles in his hands. He then demanded "the big money". When she told him that she didn't have more money, he became increasingly agitated. Eventually, she showed him an overdue utility bill, as evidence that she did not have an abundance of money, and the suspects ran off.
The victim was transported to an area hospital, by ambulance. Investigators are continuing to gather information.
