MAYNARDVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Union County grand jury indicted a Manynardville man for assaulting a law enforcement officer in February.

Mark Stephen Smith, 53, is charged with one count of Aggravated Assault and one count of Domestic Assault.

On February 3, Maynardville Police Sergeant Donnie Shipley  was  dispatched  to  a home on  Somerset  Way  to  investigate  a  domestic dispute.

He says Smith ran to the back of the house and fired a gun several times. Smith refused to drop his weapon and Officer Shipley shot him in the shoulder.

He was taken to Tenova Hospital in Knoxville for treatment.
