Firefighters battling brush fires all over East TN

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It's a busy time for firefighters all across East Tennessee. The State Division of Forestry says there are brush fires burning in Anderson, Campbell, Cocke, Hawkins, Knox, Scott and Union Counties.

Investigators think several of the fires are arson, and recent dry conditions have helped fuel the flames.

Knox County crews are still keeping an eye on a brush fire that quickly got out of control. It started around lunch time Thursday on Millertown Pike. Neighbors say they were burning leaves when a gust of wind pushed the flames into brush. The fire quickly spread, burning around 100 acres. Two families had to be evacuated, and are staying with relatives.

Rural/Metro firefighters and the Division of Forestry quickly dug out a fireline with a bulldozer. They will monitor the fire to make sure it doesn't get out of control.

There's still no word on what caused a second brush fire on the Sevier-Cocke County line. An "all call" for firefighters and the Wildland Task Force went out just after two Thursday afternoon. The fire started in the woods off Iris Way in Cosby. There's no word on how much damage it caused.
