Flood watch remains in effect for French Broad River

DEL RIO, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The French Broad River rushed by the Tent Camping USA campground in Del Rio Thursday.

"We've been watching the weather and kind of monitoring it. Got up two or three times last night to check on the water level because it is getting close, it's cresting right on the edge of the bank here," said Mike Burke, a camper.

"We're really close to having lake-front property," said Rick Stines, another camper.

So far, the campground has escaped major flooding, which is good news for everyone there.

"I've been up here 22 years in a row - it's about as high as I've seen it. But it was probably five foot higher in the middle of the night last night - it's gone down again," said Marshall Greene.

During the day Thursday, the river was above the flood stage of 10 feet in some places, causing minor flooding and some roads to close temporarily. And while the threat of flooding from the French Broad continues, campers said they won't let it ruin their 4th of July.

"Well, we're just going to hang out and picnic and frolic around today, you know - just get a little quiet time, rest and relaxation," said Burke.

If the river does threaten their campers, they have a plan:

"Put the bikes on the trailer and get to higher ground," said Greene.

If you come to a closed or flooded road, don't try driving through the water because you don't know how deep it is or what's underneath.
