Crimetracker: Hawkins Co. Sheriff’s Office ends pursuit with felony drug arrest

ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Early Thursday morning, a Hawkins County Sheriff’s Narcotics Officer was conducting drug interdiction operations on the Rogersville portion of Highway 11-W.

While doing so, a narcotics officer observed a 2000 Red Honda Accord traveling East on Highway 11-W while having only one functioning headlight.

A traffic stop was then attempted on the vehicle, at which time the vehicle heavily accelerated and began to evade. Hawkins County Sheriff’s Patrol Corporal Brian Boggs was also present and assisted in the vehicle pursuit.

Due to the time approaching 2:00 a.m., the traffic volume on Highway 11-W was extremely light; and the pursuit could be initiated without placing innocent motorists in danger. The vehicle ignored blue lights and siren and continued to flee eastbound for approximately four miles, at which time officers noticed the suspect vehicle beginning to gradually slow-down from what appeared to be engine problems.

The vehicle continued to flee for approximately another mile before apparent engine failure forced the driver to bring the vehicle to a stop in the median near the intersection of Surgoinsville Creek Road.

At that time, the driver was then removed from the vehicle without any further incident. The driver was identified as 24-year-old David Schreck of Johnson City, Tennessee.

While speaking with Schreck, officers could detect a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the suspect vehicle. When Schreck was made aware of the marijuana odor which officers were detecting, Schreck stated that he did have marijuana inside of a red backpack.

Schreck then further consented to a search of his vehicle and its contents. Inside of the red backpack, officers recovered a bag of marijuana and items consistent with the resell of marijuana, such as additional plastic baggies and digital ounce/gram scales. Officers also recovered a small amount of Clonazepam (generic for Klonopin), which is a schedule IV controlled substance.

Schreck was unable to produce a prescription for the Clonazepam. Officers also recovered a handwritten drug ledger, which is commonly used by drug sellers to keep track of their sales--who owes them money and for what amount of drugs.

Officers also recovered $370.00 cash from Schreck, which is believed to proceeds from illegal drug sales. Schreck’s vehicle and the cash were seized.

Schreck was processed into that Hawkins County Jail on charges of possession of Marijuana with intent to deliver, possession of Schedule IV Controlled Substance (Clonazepam), felony evading arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of light law.

At time of press release, Schreck remains lodged in the Hawkins County Jail under a $75,000.00 bond and is awaiting a February 27th court date.
