MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Hundreds showed up at the Blount County courthouse in support of the Second Amendment Saturday afternoon.

"The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. That's not something that's made up. It's a quote from the United States Constitution. And it's pretty clear - shall not be infringed. You don't have to interpret that language very much," said Scott Hall, who attended the rally.

Randy Ailey organized the event. He's against proposals to ban semi-automatic assault weapons and limit ammunition magazines.

"There's a lot of people out here that have 30 round magazines. I've talked to people and that's what they use in their house to defend themselves," said Ailey.

"I feel like we all have the choice and freedom to choose how we want to have our weapons whether it be high capacity rounds or not high capacity rounds," said Teresa Gregory.

Some said banning semi-automatic weapons is a fast way to slide down a slippery slope.

"It starts somewhere - if they get assault weapons, then they may go on and come down to your handguns," said Connie Forester.

Stacy Houston is retired from the US Army, and said gun restrictions won't stop crime.

"With me being overseas for the last 15 years and being in countries that have these laws the civilians can't have weapons and stuff like that. They still have crime," he said.

For some, it's about protection:

"I'm just worried about being able to protect my family. And if they change one constitutional right, they might try to change the rest of them," said Ben Davidson.

Organizers urged ralliers to contact their congressmen and let them know how they feel.
