A LOCAL 8 WEATHER ALERT is in effect into Wednesday due repeated rainfall. A Flood Watch is in effect for our area until 7 AM Wednesday. Where there are more pauses in the rain, totals will be closer to 2 inches but some will receive at least 4 inches of rainfall total. Creeks and streams run high and areas with poor runoff could face flooding problems. Busy commute hours could face more slowdowns, with fog and standing water on roads as well.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - It's America Recycles Day, and the Knoxville Police Department partnered with several agencies to help people recycle their old or unwanted medications.
It's part of a series of events that have been helping east Tennessee wipe out prescription pill abuse.
People could drop off meds at the West Town Mall in Knoxville and at Walgreens in Oneida.
Officers say they've been collecting medications since 2008, and say so far, they've collected over 6,000 pounds.
"It helps the environment. It removes another layer of pollution from the system and it also removes another layer of abused medications such as pain killers and different types of narcotics that are often involved in criminal activity," said Craig McNew with KPD.
You could also exchange mercury thermometers for digital ones at the event, as well as learn about recycling from the city of Knoxville and Knox County Solid Waste Offices.
