KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) Knoxville firefighters are on high alert as Fourth of July celebrations kick off.

In 2011, the department responded to 22 fire calls and 7 medical calls related to fireworks. Last year, they had 4 related medical calls.

"Have a 5 gallon bucket of water nearby for those duds that don't ignite," said KFD's D.J. Corcoran.

Many of the fireworks you buy to do at home can reach temps of a 1,000 degrees or more.

"Make sure that you have some kind of eye protection. Make sure that only adults are permitted to have the lighters, the matches," said Corcoran. "If you've got anything like a bottle rockets or roman candles, anything that shoots off into the air like most of them do. You've gotta be a little bit leery of the fallout area."

While many assume sparklers and smaller fireworks are safe for kids to play with, it's important for parents to constantly supervise.

"The largest number of fireworks we see are usually from the most unassuming fireworks because they stand away from the bigger things... the roman candles... but they're not as safe with the sparklers, the firecrackers because they think they're small, but that's where you'll see the most bodily damage," said Corcoran.
