ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Fern Gentry remembers her granddaughter as a young teen with her whole life ahead of her.

But in 2003, Gentry was only left with memories. She only saw Amanda Berry in family photos or a missing person's flyer.

The 16-year-old girl is now a 27-year-old mother.

"Is that little girl your baby?" Gentry asked Berry during a phone call Tuesday.

"She's my daughter," Berry said. "She was born on Christmas."

"I thought about you all this time. I never forgot you," Gentry said.

The 6-year-old girl was born in captivity. She lived with Berry and two other women who were held prisoner inside a Cleveland home.

Police arrested three brothers, Ariel Castro, Pedro Castro and Onil Castro, accused of kidnapping them and holding them captive.

Gentry shed tears of joy Tuesday after speaking with her granddaughter. She's thankful all of the girls are alive.

Her uncle, Curtis Berry, said he did not believe it at first when relatives in Cleveland, Ohio, told him his niece had been found.

He explained in a telephone interview from his home in Elizabethton that the family had been told before that authorities might have found his niece.

Berry said that by the time the call came on Monday, 10 years after Berry's disappearance the night before her 17th birthday, he no longer believed that his niece would be found alive.

He said, "I'd done lost hope."

Amanda Berry is one of three women who were rescued from a Cleveland home on Monday after they went missing separately about a decade ago, when they were in their teens or early 20s

Berry's family in Tennessee is planning a trip to Cleveland to reunite with her.
