PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Lifeguards at Dollywood's Splash Country have gotten several approvals of their life saving skills during audits this year.

Dollywood’s Splash Country’s aquatics staff received a score of “exceeds standards" during recent audits.

It's comforting to parents like Kim Dinkins, who traveled from Jacksonville to spend time with the family. She says though, she still wants to know where her kids are at all times.

"Oh I don't try and take my eyes off my kids ever. So it's just important to know where they're at all times," said Kim Dinkins. "Cause even though they're good swimmers you just never know if they're gonna get in distress. I know that there are lifeguards here and I just feel better knowing that I have an eye on them."

Jessica Yokley with Dollywood's Splash Country said lifeguards go through a multi-day training course before taking the stand. The inspections are done at random, and park staff doesn't even know they're being evaluated.

"You've got to be rescue ready is what we call it for anything that may come towards your way," said Yokley. "Every area they are scanning they can get to in about 20 seconds or less."

Lifeguards say many of the rules they follow here at Dollywood's Splash Country are the same rules you should follow in your own back yard.

"You don't ever want to turn your back on it. If you do have a swimming pool learn CPR it's very basic anybody can do it," said Yokley.

Lifeguards remind you to pay close attention to spinal injuries which can happen if someone hits the bottom of the pool or even goes down a slide the wrong way.
