Man shot at West Town Mall responds to KPD announcement

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Knoxville Police admitted an officer's "horrible mistake" ended with a bullet in a man's back outside of West Town Mall.

Now Abraham Dudley's attorneys are responding.

KPD Chief David Rausch announced that Officer Chris Edmonds violated police policy when he shot Dudley in the parking lot last month.

Dudley was rushed to UT Medical Center, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

On Saturday, his attorneys, Scott Green and Greg Harrison, released a statement:

"The recently released video footage, as well as the comments by Chief (David) Rausch, confirm what Abraham Dudley has maintained since the day Officer Edmonds shot him. While the full extent of Mr. Dudley's injuries are not yet known, there was no reason or justification for the gun-shot which caused his injuries. Mr. Dudley remains hopeful the city of Knoxville will honor its prior commitment to make things right."

Officer Edmonds is still on administrative leave, but Chief Rausch says he will not lose his job.

Dudley was not charged with any crime.
