Neighbors confirm name of man killed by 2 KCSO deputies

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- A man was shot and killed by two Knox County deputies Saturday.

According to KCSO spokeswoman Martha Dooley, the two deputies responded to a disturbance call at a home on Nubbin Ridge Road shortly before 6:30 p.m. As they approached the home, the suspect came to the door pointing a shotgun at them.

The deputies fired and Rural Metro pronounced the suspect dead at the scene. The officers were not injured.

Property records show the house belongs to Peter George Biljak, and neighbors confirm he was the man shot. The Sheriff's Department hasn't confirmed names of the suspect or the deputies involved.

The shooting is under investigation and the two officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay as the investigation continues.

It's standard procedure for officers involved in shootings to be placed on administrative leave with pay.

Biljak's neighbors say they're shocked by the incident. A couple that's lived across the street from Biljak for 34 years said he's always been a friendly and helpful neighbor.

"If he'd see us out, he'd stop by and talk and everything. And he just was a very accommodating person," said Max Cole.

The Cole's went on to say Biljak was an engineer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for years until they retired him early. He also was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
