MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Fairview United Methodist Church's congregation of nearly 3,000 looked back to humble beginnings Sunday.

The church celebrated its centennial with a worship service and a potluck. Some of the church's oldest members shared memories from the church's first santuary, a small white chapel that stood across the street.

"Oh, it was real peaceful and quiet," said Margeret Hitson.

Hitson's called the church home for nearly 70 years. She raised her children there like many continue to do today.

Those who haven't been around as long reflected on the congregation's path and all it's been given.

"Basically it is a day to celebrate who God is, what he has done, what he is doing and what he will do for the congregation of Fairview," said coordinator Roxanna Jones.

A special time capsule dedication followed the potluck, to be opened 100 years from now.
