CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - One mom is preparing for the first Mother's Day without her daughter.

We first introduced you to Destiny Keathley last fall, a brave Crossville sixth grader who died after battling brain cancer.

Six months later, her Crossville community continues to honor her memory. The latest way is through Destiny's Garden, going right in front of her house.

"I don't feel like I should be doing a 'memorial garden' for her. I feel like she should be here telling me I'm doing something wrong. Or this needs to go here and that needs to go there and we need to do this," said Angel Bowman, Destiny's mother.

There are pink, blue and bright yellow flowers popping out of the mulch, and a swing is next to a wishing well

Bowman has spent weeks planting with the help of friends. Everything is colorful, even the glass rocks hugging the swing.

"Actually it doesn't cut you, no matter how hard you try it doesn't cut you, and it sparkles when the sun hits it. It sparkles like diamonds," said Bowman.

The most intimate detail is a rock signed by Destiny's sixth grade class, who is now finishing up the school year without her.

"It's touching to see how many people she touched at such a young age," said Bowman. "It's too easy to just sit and cry. But if we don't do anything, then it's like she passed away for nothing."

Bowman shares Destiny's story with everyone she can to inspire others and to help raise money for cancer research.

This is something she takes comfort in as her first Mother's Day without her daughter approaches.

"I know she'll be with me in spirit, but yeah this Mother's Day is gonna be hard. Almost one of those things I didn't want to come," said Bowman.

Destiny may be gone, but her smile and faithful spirit stay alive.

Bowman says the garden could be finished by Sunday if the weather cooperates.
