Fallen Knoxville Police Officer David Munson was laid to rest Friday. His family invited Local 8 News Anchor Lauren Davis to capture the love they felt in life, and still feel in death.
Hundreds of police officers created an pathway for fellow Officer David Munson. Deputy Chief of Police Gary Holliday says, "We're here to show respect for his memory and his family."
Motorcycles and police cruisers lead the procession from Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church to Seymour Memory Gardens. Officer Munson died earlier this week when his motorcycle went off the road in Sevierville. Holliday says, "A lot of people don't realize the sacrifices law enforcement officer's family has to go through. The sleepless nights the hours away from their loved ones."
Munson's wife of five years, Christina, collapsed in front of the casket.
As she left, she clutched the flag that draped his casket close to her chest. KPD presented Officer Munson with a posthumous honor.
Holliday says, "He was just awarded officer of month for catching burglar. It's a sad day for the department."
They presented his wife with the award during the ceremony. There was a helicopter fly-over at the end of the service. Friends consoled each other at the cemetery. David's friend Porta Chamberlain says, "David was an exceptional human being. He was what every girl dreams of. He loved the Lord first, Christina second and loved being a police officer."
Officer Munson had been with the department since 2011.
The family has set up a fund. All the money will go to Officer Munson's wife, Christina. She is planning on moving out of her home she shared with Officer Munson. Click the link below if you would like to donate to Christina.
