Man killed in fiery crash on I-40 identified

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The driver killed in a overnight crash that shut down westbound I-40 near Cherry Street has been identified as 24-year-old Scott Lakeland Hankal of Knoxville.

Hankal's Dodge pick up collided with a tractor-trailer around 2:00 a.m. Friday morning, sparking a massive blaze which closed the Interstate for hours. A KPD spokesperson described the flames so intense officers could not approach either vehicle. They immediately closed the highway and rerouted

Police believe Hankal was headed the wrong way on the Interstate when he came upon the semi. The driver of the semi, who police identified as Scott Beaman, swerved right to miss the truck at which time the Dodge veered left and back into its path. After colliding, both vehicles continued to the side of the road and erupted into flames.

The name of the driver killed is being withheld at this time. Police have said he appears to be iin his 20's and live in Knoxville. His dental records are being sent to investigators, so the medical examiner can make a positive identification.

Beaman, 41, was taken to Physician's Regional to be treated for what were described as non-life threatening injuries.
