South Knoxville shooting sends one man to hospital; suspect in custody

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- One person is in custody following shooting in South Knoxville that sent one man to the hospital early Friday morning. The man was caught at a traffic stop; a witness identified him as the shooter.

The victim was reportedly shot several times behind the Executive Inn of Knoxville on Chapman Highway. When police arrived shortly after 4:00 a.m. they found the victim unresponsive along with a witness who was trying to help him.

Emergency responders were able to revive him and take him to UT Medical Center. He is reportedly in stable condition now. Officials have not released his name pending notification of his family.

The witness was able to provide authorities with a description of several people fleeing the scene in a red Suburban. Several minutes later, a member of the Sheriff's Dept. spotted a vehicle matching the description on Chapman Hwy. near John Sevier Hwy.

The driver was taken to the KPD Safety Building to be interviewed, while the SUV was towed to the City Pound.

Police believe three other individuals could be involved and are searching for them. Officials are hoping nearby security cameras will be able to help the investigation.
