Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT) - 32-million Americans are illiterate. In the Knox County school system, less than half of the third graders can read at their grade level.
The Knox County Mayor, Tim Burchett along with the school system are trying to tackle the issue.
Mayor Burchett gave a three-million dollar grant to target Kindergarten through third grade.
Parents say they're also making sure their kids don't get left behind.
One parent we talked with, Keira Wyatt, had this to say, "I'm very concerned because I know in order to make it in this economy today - you've got to have an education. You've got to read and you've got to write."
The Knox County School System offers lots of interactive programs for kids who are struggling with reading.
