Pest spraying Monday in Smokies cove

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) -- Barring freezing weather or heavy rain, forestry technicians in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will spray for pests in Cades Cove on Monday.

That means the Loop Road through the scenic cove will be closed that day and part of the loop will be closed on Tuesday as well.

Technicians will use truck-mounted sprayers to treat hemlocks near the road for hemlock woolly adelgids (ah-DEHL'-jids). An oily soap solution is used to help protect the trees.

Hikers will be able to use the road during the spraying but not motor vehicles or bicycles.
