Police look into bizarre homeless death

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) --- "Welcome to the Wasteland" Kenny took another pull from the whisky bottle. His friends swung hammers under the hot sun.

They were looking for metal, wood, anything they could sell.

A hundred feet away was where it happened.

On Tuesday night police pulled a man's body out of a tent. He was hidden, buried beneath a tower of blankets.

Four other people were sleeping on top of them.

Charles Rose, Joshua Cool, Brandon Roberts, and Hope Warvi were brought in.

The dead man might be a homicide victim, the cops aren't sure.

"I'm not superman it can get me to, get my friends, they can get anybody." Kenny is calm, fearing for your life is an everyday sort of thing on Roberts Street.

The sun is baking. Kenny lifts his black leather hat and takes another pull.

If he is worried about the crime he isn't showing it. Even when the promise for more violence is coming.

And already popular homeless encampment is seeing a boom time, population rising with the temperatures.

"It looks like an all night dance party out here sometimes. When it gets hot everyone comes out and you get substance abuse and depression and its a volatile mix."

Police are still investigating the death.

Welcome to the Wasteland.
