Sevier Co. fire tears through resort; renters return to see what's left

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- One by one cabins on Black Bear Cub Way were taken down by fire, and Monday renters got a chance to see if their belongings were still there.

Folks evacuated on Sunday night, waited outside of Calvary Baptist Church to head up to Black Bear Resort where the fire started on Sunday afternoon. Firefighters say they battled the worst possible conditions while trying to save what homes they could.

"Wind driven fire is the most dangerous fire," said Pigeon Forge Fire Chief Tony Watson.

Watson says more than 60 cabins were destroyed or damaged by the fire. He says that number may go up as crews get in to survey the damage.

The fire is now contained and under control.

Pigeon Forge is open for business, the parkway was not impacted by the fire.
