KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A retired cardinal who lives in Knoxville will be among those electing the next pope.

Cardinal Justin Rigali is scheduled to leave for Rome on Tuesday after a morning prayer service at All Saints Catholic Church.

Rigali spent three decades as a Vatican diplomat and high-level administrator before being sent to St. Louis as archbishop in 1994.

In 2003, he was appointed to replace Philadelphia's retiring archbishop and was named a cardinal by Pope John Paul II.

Rigali was among those who elected Pope Benedict XVI in 2005.

He retired from the archdiocese of Philadelphia in 2011. At the time, the archdiocese was facing two grand jury reports that accused the church of hiding sex-abuse complaints.

Although retired, Rigali remains active in the life of the church.
