NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Christmas gifts of bicycles and skateboards should be accompanied by helmets.
Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University notes that about 135 children die each year in the U.S. in bicycle accidents and 267,000 are injured.
Sarah Haverstick, who manages the Safe Children program for the hospital, said helmets can reduce the risk of serious brain injury by more than 80 percent.
These tips are offered.
Make sure the helmet fits and your child knows how to put it on correctly. Choose the right gear for the right ride. Bike helmets are designed for use with bikes. Children using scooters, skateboards or rollerblades need a multi-sport helmet to protect their head from injury.
Also, make sure the bike is the right size for the child.
