UPDATE: Swerving truck hits semi, closing S. Alcoa Hwy during rush hour

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A swerving Dodge Ram crosses into an oncoming lane and slams into a semi just as rush hour ramps up and closes a stretch of southbound Alcoa Hwy. just south of the river for about an hour. All lanes were reopen by 9:30 a.m.

The wreck happened just after 7:00 a.m. at Alcoa Hwy. and Woodson Dr., near the Agriculture Center exit. According to police, a white BMW was stopping, wanting to make a left turn when the driver of the black Dodge pickup swerved to miss it. The truck wasn't able to avoid the BMW as it went into northbound lanes and into the path of a tanker semi.

The pickup's driver, Jonathan Brackens, was thrown from the truck and had to be taken to the hospital, but is reportedly doing better. He was cited for Careless Driving and not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the semi, Jackie Hartman, has a bruised knee, while the BMW's driver, Kindell Aaron, left on her own.

Police cautioned traffic is still moving very slowly and recommended that drivers headed to Blount Co. use I-140. Anyone headed to McGhee-Tyson Airport should take Pellissippi Parkway, they added.

The tractor trailer was filled with liquid cement. HazMat teams have been called to the scene to determine if they will have to drain it before setting the truck upright.
