travel, holiday travel
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - It may seem impossible to save on airfare, but if you haven't booked your holiday flights, we've got a great idea for you. There is a perfect day and time to buy your ticket and save some money.
It's no secret it's expensive to travel over the holidays, but experts say if you don't book your flight soon, you could be out a lot of money.
"People that book for holidays, are booking earlier than October, because by that time, you're just getting the leftovers. Whatever is left over might be a little more, higher than they would normally pay," says Kay Bone, a travel agent with World Ventures Travel.
So mark your calendars. Farecompare.com says the best time to buy airline tickets are Tuesdays at 3:00 pm.
Here's why: airlines typically file sales late Monday. Then, Tuesday, airlines try to match the new, lower prices. So, at 3:00, the cheaper seats are available for you to reserve. But this only lasts a few days. By Thursday, the sale prices are gone!
And don't forget, when booking, beware of those hidden fees.
"Make sure the taxes are figured in, and any extra fees, plus baggage fees are always extra, they're never included in the price of the ticket," says Bone.
But you don't just save by booking on certain days, Bone says flying on certain days will help you save too.
"For Thanksgiving, if they could travel, before Wednesday, like Tuesday and come back Thanksgiving day, or Saturday versus the Sunday."
But unless you book your tickets soon, she says it won't matter what day you fly.
"It's not going to get any cheaper. If they think they're going to wait to get a bargain, they're not."
