Knoxville, TN (WVLT) -- Many people are wanting to give to the efforts in Japan, but with the spirit of goodwill, also comes those who will try to take advantage of the situation.
Tennessee Secretary of State says there are a number of ways for you to spot a scam:
1. Make sure you know who the person or organization is that's asking for the money. Learn what you can about them.
2. Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions before making a donation.
3. Don't be afraid to say "No." If someone tries to put you on the spot for a donation, think it through first.
4. Give with a check instead of cash. It helps reduce the chances of fraud.
