Seymour couple starts picking up the pieces after fire destroys home and business

SEYMOUR, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Bud Counsil stood shaking his head at the pile of rubble that used to be the Seymour Flea Market - and his home - for the past 11 years. Fire ripped through the building Friday afternoon.

"We lost everything - we lost it all. We had a little insurance, but not near enough to cover what we lost," said Counsil.

But and his wife spent the night in their van, trying to figure out what to do next.

"We just have to take it a day at a time and see where we're going to go from here. Gotta get this place cleared out and go from there," he said.

Fire crews stayed on scene until about 1:30 am Saturday and came back twice to put out hot spots.

The Counsils estimate their loss at about $450,000, but said the hardest part is losing their seven pets to the flames.

"We found three of our dogs - two of them reasonably in tact, but then the other one was all bones. Burnt to death," said Counsil.

A state Bomb and Arson inspector will help determine the cause of the fire this week. In the meantime, the Counsils said they're glad they still have each other, and said if the insurance money is enough, they plan to rebuild the market.

The American Red Cross is putting them up in a hotel for the next few nights, and gave them gift certificates to help with food and clothing costs.
