WHITE PINE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Jefferson County authorities seized more than one thousand rounds of ammunition and nearly a dozen guns after a standoff Saturday night.

Dana Morelock, 53, was arrested after a four-hour standoff with police at his Roy Messer Highway home.

According to Sheriff Bud McCoig, a concerned friend asked officers to check on Morelock who recently lost his job.

"He (the officer) pulled up to the drive way and Mr. Morelock did come to the door," McCoig said. "He could see him through the door, hollering screaming then all of a sudden Morelock opened fire on the officer."

McCoig said the officer took cover and waited for others to arrive on scene. When they did, McCoig said Morelock grabbed a shotgun and opened fire again.

Four hours later, authorities used pepper gas to force Morelock out of his home.

Neighbors told Local 8 News they're glad the standoff ended peacefully.

"I'm kind of heartbroken to think someone would do that with the numerous kids that live around here," said Sheena McIntosh who's glad her kids weren't home to witness any of it.

Morelock doesn't have a criminal history and does have a gun permit. But Sheriff McCoig expects that to change after this incident.

"With these actions, he does not need a gun ever again," he said.

McCoig told Local 8 News Morelock was intoxicated during the standoff. He was charged with aggravated assault.

He is expected to be in court Wednesday.
