Striking down Cystic Fibrosis one pin at a time

Josh Holloway and Nick Herron prepare to break a world record and raise awareness about Cystic Fibrosis.

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Nick Herron and Josh Holloway are both avid bowlers trying to make history at Crest Bowling Lanes in Maryville.

"We're trying to break the world record for the most pins knocked down in a 24-hour period by two people." said Nick Herron

It's a feat they're not trying to achieve for glory but to raise money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis.

Nick explained "I don't have CF but my best friend does and I've seen him battle and struggle with it daily. I wanted bring attention to a disease that most people don't know about."

Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects about 30,000 people in the United States. It's something that you're born with and there's currently no cure for it.

Heather Perry from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation explained "Patients with CF suffer from a lack of sodium chloride an essential enzyme that keeps everything moving in our bodies."

Due to the lack of sodium chloride, patients often suffer from sticky mucus that collects on their lungs.

"If you think about the worst respiratory infection that you ever had and you're just coughing but nothing moves; that's what CF patients go through daily." said Heather

While there isn't currently a cure; medication and exercise like bowling helps to reduce symptoms.

"We are so excited that these guys are helping to spread the word about CF by attempting to break a world record." Heather said.

But it's more that just breaking a world record for Nick and Josh; it's about making a difference.

Josh said "This is a medical issue that people need to know about. If people don't know about it than how can we ever find a cure? Every little bit helps!"

The event is called Striking Down Cystic Fibrosis and is a 24-hour bowl-a-thon. It starts at noon on Sunday, September 8th and ends Monday, September 9th at noon. It all takes place at Crest Bowling Lanes 330 Whitecrest Drive, Maryville TN.

Nick and Josh are looking for more support to break the record and pledge money for the Knoxville Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
