29-year-old Kyle Rose was a state inmate who had been at the Union County jail since May, waiting to be taken to prison once space opened up. But on Sunday morning, everything changed.

MAYNARDVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Kyle Rose grew up in Maynardville and was well-known around town.

"He was the type of a person that let you know what he was, who he was. But he was a person also that would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He was a mischievous little boy when he was growing up. And evidently, it followed him through life," said a former neighbor.

Rose had a lengthy criminal record dating back to 2001, with everything from assault, reckless endangerment and drug charges. In May, he was busted for theft over $1,000 and was being housed in the Union County jail until prison space opened up in another county. Then on Sunday morning, fellow inmates found him unresponsive in his cell.

"I'm shocked that he's dead. I mean, his mother died the first of the year, and then this happened too? I'm really shocked," said Maudie Ward, a former neighbor.

The Sheriff's Office said corrections workers gave Rose breakfast about 15 minutes before they found him unresponsive. He died at Tennova Medical Center on Wednesday morning. The TBI is now investigating.

"Kyle did not deserve to die the way he did. Even though he was a mischievous person," said a former neighbor.

"I hope they do figure out what happened to him - give the family piece of mind over it," said Ward.

Right now, the sheriff's office isn't releasing a cause of death. Rose was taken to UT for an autopsy. Neighbors said they want to know if drugs were involved. They also said Rose left behind a young daughter.
