KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- East Tennessee is adding jobs by the 10's of thousands and keeping up with the national pace of jobs creation.

Leaders in Tennessee say the state has made an investment in auto manufacturing and tourism and the investment is paying off.

Susan Whitaker, head of the state's tourism, says more people are coming and they're staying longer. She says that leaves tax money here and creates jobs.

"A traveler that's coming a distance, he's staying along time and if we have more people staying longer they'll spend more," said Whitaker.

Senator Lamar Alexander says the state's investment in auto manufacturing is paying off also. He says Alcoa's announcement of 200 new jobs is an example of how that's working.

"Both tourism and Alcoa are contributing new jobs to Tennessee this week. When the governor emphases the smoky mountains and our automobile and manufacturing presence I think he's on the right track and I think the results are showing," said Alexander.
