TennCare outlines prescription drug monitoring

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The state has stopped three of TennCare's top 10 prescribers of commonly abused pain and mental health drugs from filling prescriptions through the health-care program for the poor and uninsured among other steps to cut down on overprescribing drugs.

TennCare Director Darin Gordon outlined steps under way to cut down abuse and fraud in a letter to U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, who is investigating the overprescription of drugs in the federal Medicaid system.

The Tennessean reports Grassley sought answers to numerous questions on how Tennessee monitors fraud and abuse after the state reported the top 10 prescribers of eight pain and antipsychotic medications (http://tnne.ws/JhqtyR).

The top three prescribers -- a physician, a physician's assistant and an advanced practice nurse -- are all from East Tennessee. Two have been disciplined.
