Tennessee 22nd state to request convention concerning budget

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Tennessee became the 22nd state to join a group requesting a convention of states to address the country's growing deficit.

"We balance our budgets in Tennessee," Rep. Dennis Powers (R-Jacksboro), the resolutions sponsor, said. "Congress should do the same."

The house joint resolution overwhelmingly passed 89-2 Monday night.

The effort is part of a multi-state initiative to pass a constitutional amendment that would force the U.S. Congress to pass a balanced budget each year.

Rep. Powers cited the growing U.S. deficit, which currently stands are more than $17 trillion. He added federal lawmakers add around $1 trillion to the deficit each year.

"We continue to borrow at a rate that will bankrupt the country," Rep. Powers said. "We have to do everything we can to keep this from happening.

Georgia made a similar motion earlier this year. At least 34 states must pass similar legislation before a convention of states could convene under the U.S. Constitution.
