Tennova considers new west Knoxville locale for hospital

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- On Thursday, officials with Tennova announced they have the option to buy 110 acres of land on Middlebrook Pike near Old Weisgarber Road. They said they are considering several options for what to do with the site, including possibly using it to replace Physicians Regional Medical Center.

“The decision to purchase this land was not reached overnight. We considered the changing needs of our patients, new methods of reimbursement, and healthcare reform,” said Michael Garfield, Market CEO of Tennova Healthcare, highlighting the fact the land is in one of the fastest growing parts of the city.

“Purchasing an option on this land is the beginning of the process to ensure we are positioned to most effectively fulfill our mission and advance our vision for strong local health care and economic growth for our community.”

Despite registering 53,000 patient interactions last year and continuing to serve as a vibrant medical campus, Tennova officials said its Physicians Regional Medical Center was built to support an older definition of acute care.

The company said it isn't "economically feasible" to update nearly 80 year-old hospital, formerly known as St. Mary's.

“Physicians Regional Medical Center has proudly served the Knoxville community for more than 83 years, and we will continue to honor the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy by fulfilling our mission to provide care for people in need in the area,” said Metz.
