The "Souper Bowl": There is a such thing as a free lunch

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Whoever said "there's no such thing as a free lunch" forgot to the Salvation Army. The agency will serve up free soup on Market Square on Friday to promote its Soup and Shelter Club.

The Salvation Army will be filling up bowls from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It said it won't charge for the meal, but is accepting donations. The event was originally scheduled for January 25, but had to be rescheduled due to the ice storm that day.

The Salvation Army said it serves more than 62,000 meals each day at a cost of $1.01 per meal. It also works to help each person it works with take the steps necessary to improve their lives.

Last year alone, the agency said more than 200 men and women made the transition from homelessness to a lifestyle of employment, productivity and independence.

The Souper Bowl provides donors a way to make monthly pledges, with by check or with their credit cards.

The Souper Bowl is sponsored by WVLT, Graphic Creations, Remedy Coffee and Brown & Roberto, PLLC.
