UNION COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Union County Director of Schools, Wayne Goforth has been suspended without pay.
The school board is considering charges against the director, which would lead to removing his tenure.
The School District has been struggling financially, highlighted when the State rejected their proposed budget.
Now, faced with the possibility of losing thier state funding, the board has voted on fudging the numbers.
The county collects 91.3% of taxes. They're going to tell the state that number is actually 94%.
The difference is about $70,000 in revenue, which the school board will look for elsewhere.
They're close to not paying their bills, including a school bus payment due on Thursday.
They will resubmitt their new budget, with the 3% changes, on Monday. It needs to be approved by the end of the month or the school district could miss out on $1.5 million in BEP funds.
Those are crucial to paying employees and keeping the schools open.
Attorneys for Wayne Goforth are promising a lawsuit, saying the suspension is illegal.
