Veterans being honored all weekend

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Veteran's Day might be on Sunday but some organizations are taking advantage of the weekend and starting their commemorations early.

The group Volunteers of America is just one organization holding Veteran's Day events.

More than 200 thousand veteran's are homeless in the United States. Numbers that prompted the Volunteers of America to hold a two day event at the National Guard Armory.

It's called "The Homeless Veteran's Stand Down." It starts Friday, November 9 at 7:30 a.m. and runs until 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, the event begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 2:00 p.m.

This event gives homeless veterans a chance to get help with everything from veteran's benefits to clothing and medical care. The idea for this was taken from what really happens in times of war, when combat units take a break to rest and recover in a safe base camp.

The 87th Knoxville Veteran's Day parade begins Friday, November 9 at the Civic Coliseum. It starts at 10:45 a.m. and runs down Gay Street.

The American Legion Post 2 hosts the event every year.

Thousands are expected to line the streets to say thank you to current soldiers and to men and women from wars past.

---------------------------------

There's also a Veteran's Day program Friday, November 9 at 2:00 p.m. It's at the Beck Cultural Center on Dandridge Avenue.

Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and state representative Joe Armstrong will be on hand and everyone is invited to attend.

The Seymour High School Choir is doing their part to honor veterans with a series of special free performances.

They have a show Friday, November 9 at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, November 10 at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, November 11 the choir will be at Dollywood.

Again, these performances are all free.
