Victims of cyberbullying fight back in lawsuits

ATLANTA (AP) -- A middle school student in Georgia is suing two classmates, claiming they created a fake Facebook page in her name and wrote racist slurs and gratuitous sexual comments on it.

Fourteen-year-old Alex Boston says she went to police and school officials to report the bullying, but was told there wasn't much they could do because the harassment took place off campus.

Now she's using a somewhat novel strategy to fight back by slapping her classmates with a libel lawsuit. The suit filed about a week ago seeks a jury trial and unspecified damages.

Attorneys say only a few lawsuits have been filed by bullying victims, but it's becoming more common.

Alex's attorney Natalie Woodward says the teen had to sue because Georgia's bullying laws don't extend to social media sites.
