Wildfires burn across East Tennessee

According to the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry, fire danger conditions in East Tennessee remain critical.

Due to fire weather danger and multiple fires across the East Tennessee area, the following counties will not be issuing permits today or through the upcoming weekend: Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi, Union and Washington.

On November 23, the Division of Forestry responded to three new fires located in Campbell and Scott Counties, near existing fires along Brimstone Mt, and the northern part of Campbell County. These fires burned a total of 835 acres, and all were suspected arson.

Crews rechecked several fires from earlier in the week that continue to grow, including a large fir near Briceville. Crews will continue to recheck the fire today.

This morning, a ten-acre breakover occurred on the large fire on Short Mountain in Hawkins County. Crews extended existing lines and are currently working to improve those existing and the new fire containment lines. A large fire on Westborne Mountain in Campbell County has grown over the past day and night to over 500 acres. Crews will continue to work through today.

No homes or buildings located around the fires have been lost.
