Wish comes true for terminally ill child

ALCOA, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Lucas Hembree loves "wobble wobbles" or as we call them helicopters and Monday his wish came true to ride in one thanks to Air Evac Lifeteam.

He's an energetic 6 year old full of life and ready for any adventure that comes his way. But he faces a very rare and terminal genetic disorder called Sanfilippo Syndrome or also known as MPS III-A.

His father, Chester Hembree explains "It's a lot like dementia you'd find in adults but this type affects children. He's 6 years old now but by the time he is 7 or 8 he could be in a complete vegetative state."

There's no cure for this disease and every day Lucas loses more and more skills; but that hasn't stopped him from living life to the fullest.

"We've created a bucket list for him and one of the things he wanted to do was take a ride in a helicopter. I posted his request on Facebook hoping someone could help us fulfill it." said Chester

Just a few days later Whitney Miller from Air Evac Lifeteam saw the post and knew she could make this wish happen!

"We usually transport people in serious condition to the hospital but to be able to give back something like this to a little boy and make a difference in his life-- it means the world to us." said Whitney

Lucas and his father spent 20 minutes riding around Blount County seeing the world from a different view. A chance to check something off the bucket list and enjoy every moment left.

"You're trying to wrap 80 years of life up into 10 years so we try to make each day an adventure for him." said Chester

After the ride Lucas got his very own wings and an Air Evac Lifeteam suit- fit just for him.
