New Found Gap Road, North Carolina (WVLT) -- A woman is dead after a crash in Great Smoky Mountains National Park Tuesday afternoon.
Park Rangers say a Chrysler SUV going southbound on Newfound Gap Road smashed into a National Park Service pickup truck heading north. It happened just after 2 p.m. north of Collins Creek Picnic Area in North Carolina.
The driver of the SUV, a 24-year old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both the driver of the park vehicle and his passenger were taken to the hospital for treatment.
North Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the accident investigation at the request of the Park. Chief Ranger Clay Jordan said, “Normally, we complete the investigation of motor vehicle collisions within the park, but because two of our NPS employees were involved in the accident, we have asked the NC Highway Patrol to lead this investigation.”
