World Kidney Day - why you should care

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- World Kidney Day is all about raising awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health.

But World Kidney Day is also a chance to remind everyone that organ donations save lives.

It was a live saver twice for Kristine Haley; a busy wife and mother in Clinton.

"It's an inherited disease. It's something that my mother died from her mother died from; my son has it and my sister has it. It makes your kidneys develop cysts and the cysts get bigger. Each one of my kidneys were the size of footballs." said Kristine

In 1998, she had her first kidney transplant from her husband but 14 years later she needed another kidney.

"It was April 2012 and I was in a lot of pain. I would get tired really quick." she said.

After a few months of dealing with the pain and resting; a donor match was found and she had a transplant in October 2012.

Kristine said "I was blessed to get a kidney from a 17 year old girl who died in an accident. She gave me a second chance at life because she was an organ donor."

So today on World Kidney Day; Kristine wants to remind everyone that organ donation saves lives.

"It's so important that people sign up for organ donation. I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for the kidney I got." she said.

There are many things you can do: Spread the word, join an event, get screened, donate money, become a kidney donor.
