Police identify couple killed in wreck on I-40

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A husband and wife died following a head-on collision on Interstate 40 eastbound near the Papermill Drive exit, according to the Knoxville Police Dept. The couple were identified as Esther and Richard Congdon.

According to police reports, they were heading east on Papermill Drive around 1:45 p.m. on Sunday when Esther lost control of their Ford Taurus and swerved off the road. When she tried to correct herself she struck an oncoming vehicle.

Emergency crews rushed the couple to UT Medical Center where they later died.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the crash, adding that they do not know if the driver suffered from a medical condition. She was not wearing a seat belt, and investigators don't know if Richard was.

The driver in the other car was not injured.

A short time later, KPD says another wreck happened closer to the Papermill Drive exit, also eastbound.

Three people were hurt in that wreck.

Investigators say the driver of a motorcycle struck the back of a Ford Mustang which was slowing down due to the earlier wreck.

That Mustang then hit the back of a pick-up truck carrying a trailer.
The driver and passenger of the motorcyle were taken to the hospital. And so was the driver of the Mustang.

Everyone in the second wreck are expected to recover.

The motorcycle's driver was given a citation.
