FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Jurors are deliberating in a high-profile trial involving two disbarred lawyers accused of bilking their clients out of millions of dollars in a diet-drug settlement.
Closing arguments wrapped up on Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Danny Reeves directed jurors to begin deliberations at 9 a.m. EDT on Thursday at the federal courthouse in Frankfort.
William Gallion and Shirley Cunningham Jr. are accused of bilking some 440 clients who had been hurt by the diet drug fen-phen out of their rightful shares of a $200 million legal settlement.
Defense attorneys said the two got into trouble by following the advice of a nationally known class-action expert who they had hired to advise them on how to divvy up the money. Prosecutors charged the two "got caught with their hand in the cookie jar."
