Maryville, Blount County (WVLT) - Health experts say it's a growing problem among people of all ages, especially teens.
The Blount County Community Health initiative held a conference on prescription drug abuse, Tuesday.
Over 100 national, state and local leaders and drug abuse experts gathered to talk about the impact the abuse has on the community and you.
The forum was made possible by a $5,000 grant from the pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma L.P.
Speakers say they are seeing more recreational abuse of prescription drugs and that its time to take action.
"If physicians hesitate to prescribe what patients truly need based on n the action of criminal abuse, then the abusers are dictating the practice of medicine and that's just not right," Landon Gibbs, Purdue Pharma, L.P.
Speakers urged the importance of medication when they are actually needed and that they save lives everyday, but can also be deadly if they are abused.
